#SrigleyStats Weekend Recap: Chicago Street Course
Taking a look back at this weekend's history-making action from Chicago, for the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series.
This past weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series traveled to Chicago, Illinois to take part in a historic weekend, with NASCAR’s top-three series contesting its first street course race weekend.
Though, as usual, Mother Nature wasn’t particularly kind to NASCAR, dumping a month’s worth of rain on the Chicago area over 24 hours, making things quite complicated when it came time to take the green.
Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series The Loop 121 ran 25 of 55 laps on Saturday, before being postponed to Sunday. However, a major amount of rain forced NASCAR to call the race official at that point.
Then, while Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event was also delayed a little bit, after about an hour the field got to take the green. The threat of darkness forced the race to end prematurely, but it was still an incredible one.

#SrigleyStats Spotlight Driver - Chicago: Brett Moffitt
Brett Moffitt isn’t exactly notorious for his road course prowise in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, having only scored a single top-10 result - a seventh at COTA in 2022 - on road courses before Saturday’s The Loop 121.
However, a native of Grimes, Iowa, Moffitt made everybody re-evaluate his strength this past weekend in Chicago, where the NASCAR Xfinity Series made its street course debut at the Chicago Street Course.
Moffitt, piloting the No. 25 Ford Mustang for AM Racing, came home in fourth, notching the first-ever top-five for the organization in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and the first for the driver outside of superspeedways.
It’s been a solid season for AM Racing, which debuted its NASCAR Xfinity Series entry at Daytona International Speedway in February, recording a single top-five (Chicago) and four top-10 results (Fontana, Atlanta, Martinsville, and Chicago).
After 16 of 34 races, Moffitt sits 14th in NASCAR Xfinity Series points, only 68 points below the NASCAR Playoff cutline, with an average finish of 16.4. While technically speaking it would take a lot to lock a spot in the post-season, things are looking up for the Truck Series champion this year.
With a victory by Shane Van Gisbergen in Sunday’s Grant Park 220 at the Chicago Street Course, Trackhouse Racing has become the only organization in the history of the NASCAR Cup Series to have winners from three countries.
Crossing the start-finish line in first place after 78 intense laps on Sunday, Shane Van Gisbergen has become the seventh NASCAR Cup Series driver to score a victory on debut, and the first since Johnny Rutherford in 1963.
Mother Nature was a pest this weekend at the Chicago Street Course, dropping a month’s worth of rain on the area over the course of 24 hours, forcing NASCAR to call the Xfinity Series The Loop 121 after 25 laps (55 miles), making it the shortest Xfinity Series event ever.
