#SrigleyStats Weekend Recap: Charlotte ROVAL
Taking a look back at this weekend's NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series races from Charlotte Motor Speedway's ROVAL.
This past weekend, the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL continued to bring its usual high-drama vibe to the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs, with double the drama, for two elimination events.
While Sam Mayer pulled off a clutch victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, advancing himself to the ‘Round of 8’, it was AJ Allmendinger who ended up scoring a much-needed win in the NASCAR Cup Series for Kaulig Racing.

#SrigleyStats Spotlight Driver - Charlotte ROVAL - William Byron
William Byron picked up a second-place finish in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL, after fighting AJ Allmendinger for the victory late in the event.
Granted, that in itself isn’t necessarily that impressive, considering Byron has done just that on nine occasions this year, by far a series-high. But the run that the sixth-year driver is on at the moment, makes him an extremely viable title contender.
The ‘Round of 12’ for Byron was stellar, with a victory to begin the round at Texas Motor Speedway, and then a pair of runner-up results at Talladega Superspeedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway’s ROVAL, scoring 135 points.
Had the point standings not reset entering the ‘Round of 8’, the Hendrick Motorsports driver would nearly have a full-race advantage, just because of the combination of his playoff points, and his in-race points.
In the last eight races, Byron has recorded two victories, five top-five results, and seven results inside the top-10, making him the model of consistency, no doubt about it. Heading into the ‘Round of 8’, that should concern his fellow championship-eligible drivers.
Each year that Byron has qualified for the postseason, he’s made it a round further than the previous year, meaning he looks poised to qualify for the Championship Four at Phoenix Raceway, a track in which he scored the victory earlier in the year.
Extra cause for concern - at least for the rest of the field - Byron has won races in each of the four remaining tracks on the schedule, Las Vegas (2023), Homestead (2021), Martinsville (2022), and Phoenix (2023).
With a best finish of 17th in the opening six events of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, regular-season champion Martin Truex, Jr. has had a difficult run of races, but despite that, has utilized his playoff points to qualify for the ‘Round of 8’.
In this elimination-style format, Truex is the first driver to qualify for the ‘Round of 8’ without scoring a single top-10 result throughout the opening six events of the NASCAR Cup Series post-season.
